Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

At Vitalia Strongsville, the inspiration to work in a senior living dining program began with family. My grandmother lived in a memory care community, and seeing the care she received changed my perspective. Team members treated her with kindness, and I remember noticing how much thought went into making mealtimes enjoyable.
That experience showed me that food is not only about eating. It can bring comfort, connection, and something meaningful to look forward to each day. That is what makes this work different from a traditional restaurant.
There is also a chance to challenge old ideas about dining in senior living. Some people still picture bland food or an institutional dining room. In reality, many communities offer fresh food, restaurant-style service, and chefs who care deeply about the resident experience.
That care shows up in daily meals and special traditions. One favorite event is Candlelight Dinners, where culinary team members help create a memorable evening for residents. These moments bring beauty, hospitality, and connection to the dining experience.
Residents often teach important lessons about life. They remind us that a meaningful life is not only built on accomplishments. It is also shaped by the people we love, the challenges we overcome, and the moments we take time to appreciate.
Success in a senior living dining program takes more than cooking skill. It means making a positive difference in someone’s day. A good meal can bring comfort, create a sense of home, and give residents something to look forward to.
Being dependable also matters. So does working well with others and paying attention to each resident’s needs. At the end of the day, residents should know they are cared for every time they sit down for a meal.
One meaningful reminder came through a handwritten card. After one half of a couple passed away, their beloved partner wrote to say thank you. The card mentioned years of care, little extra treats, favorite foods, and the time spent making both residents feel special.
Moments like that show the heart of this work. It is about more than daily tasks. It is about building relationships, creating comfort, and helping people feel loved and valued. The little things may seem small in the moment, but to a resident or family member, they can mean everything.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
