Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Jill Pawloski, Resident Services Director

Creating a Sense of Belonging

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Strongsville, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments help residents feel like they truly belong.

From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.

To me, “community” in a senior living setting is more than living under the same roof. It embodies belonging, connection, and shared purpose. It involves creating an environment where residents feel supported and engaged, where friendships grow naturally, and where everyone contributes to the well-being of others. Together, we celebrate milestones, provide comfort during difficult moments, and ensure every person continues to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Encouraging Engagement and Connection

Building connections among residents is essential to emotional well-being and daily satisfaction. Friendships reduce loneliness, inspire participation, and add purpose to each day. When residents support one another, our building becomes more than a home — it becomes a family.

I strive to foster these connections by creating natural opportunities for engagement. Small group gatherings, men’s clubs, socials, and craft sessions encourage conversation in relaxed settings. I also introduce residents with similar backgrounds or interests, helping them connect on shared experiences and build lasting friendships.

Connecting with the greater community is also a key part of what we do. At Vitalia Strongsville, we partner with local schools, businesses, and organizations to build intergenerational relationships. Residents participate in volunteer projects, attend community luncheons and farmers’ markets, and host visitors from the surrounding area. These partnerships keep residents active and reinforce their role as valued members of the broader Strongsville community.

One of my favorite recent events was our “Moo Moos and Margaritas” party — a lively afternoon filled with music, dancing, and colorful margaritas. Residents relaxed, shared stories, and enjoyed the cheerful, farm-themed atmosphere. It was a perfect example of the joy and togetherness that define our community.

Welcoming New Residents with Warmth

Welcoming new residents is one of the most meaningful parts of my role. From their very first day, I learn about their interests and preferences so I can connect them with neighbors who share similar passions. Our residents also play a powerful role in greeting newcomers, inviting them to meals, and encouraging them to join activities.

Through warm introductions, consistent check-ins, and genuine conversation, we make sure every new resident feels comfortable, valued, and part of the Vitalia Strongsville family. This support helps each person settle in with confidence and begin forming relationships that enrich their daily life.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Strongsville, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments that residents and families will treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
