Vitalia Senior Residences at Strongsville to Celebrate Back-to-School Season

Category: Senior Living

Author: Jill Pawloski, Resident Services Director

At Vitalia Senior Residences at Strongsville, we are always excited to celebrate the Back-to-School season! Partnering with local schools is typically a year-long effort, but there is a special focus on the time when most students are heading back to the classroom- whether in person or virtually. We have partnered with Incarnate Word Academy. Our residents find it easy to relate to school outreach efforts as many of them can recall a time when they returned to school as well.

Fostering these relationships helps build a sense of community among students, teachers, residents, and staff. There are plenty of advantages to intergenerational activities- such as decreasing the social and economic isolation so many seniors feel. Research has shown that seniors’ health, memory, and balance can benefit from volunteering regularly with children. Not only do these relationships benefit the older generations, but also the younger ones as well. Studies have also shown that children who interact with elders are less likely than others to start illegal drug use, will more likely have improved communication with their parents, and are less likely to experience depression. Lastly, these experiences can create timeless memories for both the seniors and children involved, such as making a new friend, trying a new game or activity, or listening to stories of each other’s life.

Vitalia Strongsville has been partnering with Incarnate Word Academy in Parma Heights, Ohio for the past two years. Our residents made craft box kits for the Kinder Prep students, held a popsicle stick magnet craft Zoom class, donated Black History Month books, invited students to come trick-or-treating at our community, welcomed students to sing Christmas carols, and donated new classroom decor for back-to-school in 2021. The students always send the cutest cards and treats to our residents every holiday! We plan to keep our amazing partnership with Incarnate Word by continuing to support them in their lesson plans, including them in Arrow’s traditions, and inviting them to our community for future events and holidays.

Many teachers are underpaid and often must use their own money to purchase classroom supplies. We will continue to help our schools with craft supplies, when we make craft kits for the students, and hope to donate STEM Kits – Learning Resources to Incarnate Word Kinder Prep classes.

Vitalia Strongsville includes high school and college students by offering job opportunities to anyone sixteen and older. We also promote our college reimbursement program to local colleges and nursing schools, letting them know that we are a great place to work!

Vitalia Senior Residences at Strongsville will continue to show their support in a lot of different ways this Back-to-School season and throughout the school year.
