My name is Maria Sady, and I’m the memory care director here at Vitalia Senior Living – Strongsville. In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate Jane, one of our neighborhood residents!
Jane V. attended Penn State University for two years, but missed her family, so she decided to return home. Jane worked in the Department of Public Assistance doing home visits. She was married to her husband Ed for 71 years, and had three children in a five-year period. Jane decided she wanted to finish college and get her degree. Taking care of three children during the day and taking night classes, she graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. Jane taught 3rd grade for 25 years. She was also active in her church and taught Sunday School. She loved to travel and did so until she was 85 years old. Some of her favorite places included: China, Africa, Great Britain, Alaska, and Florida. She made all the arrangements for all of her trips and kept a diary of her adventures.
I feel that it is important to honor all residents with dementia. There is a saying, “Everyone has a story,” and that story is what defines them. It makes us as caregivers feel closer to them. Our residents have lived our present day history, and what better way to hear it than from our very own residents?
