First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Noel Drach, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at Vitalia Strongsville, I believe the condition of our community reflects the care we provide to residents. From a visitor’s perspective, if our team takes good care of the building and grounds, it helps build confidence that we will show that same attention to their loved one.

That connection makes first impressions important. Maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment is one way we demonstrate pride in our community and respect for the people who call it home.

Getting the Basics Right Every Day

For me, being truly tour-ready starts with getting the basics right. Our grounds should be free of trash, flower beds should be clear of weeds, and common areas should look tidy and inviting.

These may seem like simple expectations, but they make a noticeable difference in how people experience the community.

Staying ahead of appearance concerns also requires regular inspections. At Vitalia Strongsville, I complete weekly walkthroughs with our administrator to identify areas that need attention.

We look for maintenance concerns throughout the building, including walls, trim, doors, and painted surfaces. Reviewing these areas together helps us recognize smaller issues before they become larger problems.

It also gives us an opportunity to discuss priorities and determine what needs to be addressed.

Landscaping is another important part of maintaining a welcoming appearance. Healthy plants, maintained grounds, and clean flower beds contribute to the impression visitors form before entering the building.

When we consider landscaping improvements, I consult our regional support team for ideas and guidance.

Their input helps us evaluate opportunities to refresh or improve outdoor spaces while maintaining consistent standards.

Lighting also plays an important role in the appearance and safety of our community. Proper lighting supports visibility and helps create a comfortable environment for residents, visitors, and team members.

We complete monthly lighting checks to confirm that fixtures are functioning properly and identify any safety concerns.

These regular inspections help us maintain our standards while recognizing issues that need additional attention.

Making First Impressions a Leadership Priority

One of the most valuable First Impressions practices at Vitalia Strongsville is maintaining a close working relationship with our administrator.

Having a leader who pays attention to the details makes a significant difference in keeping our community looking its best.

Our weekly walkthroughs provide an opportunity to evaluate the property together. Rather than relying on one person to notice every concern, we combine our observations and identify areas that need improvement.

This approach also reinforces the importance of First Impressions across community leadership.

I believe life safety must always come first. Once those essential responsibilities are addressed, maintaining the appearance of our community should remain one of our highest priorities.

A clean, well-maintained environment contributes to residents’ comfort and helps visitors feel confident about the community they are considering.

Making First Impressions a shared leadership responsibility helps ensure those standards receive consistent attention.

This is a practice other Plant Operations Directors can easily introduce. Scheduling a weekly walkthrough with an Executive Director or administrator creates dedicated time to review appearance concerns and discuss next steps.

Having another set of eyes can help identify details that might otherwise be overlooked. It also keeps communication open and encourages accountability for maintaining the building and grounds.

For me, first impressions are about demonstrating that we care through our actions. Keeping the lawn clean, addressing maintenance concerns, and checking the lighting all contribute to that message.

By working closely with leadership and keeping our priorities in focus, we help ensure Vitalia Strongsville remains a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained community residents are proud to call home.
